What's Your Role As A Leader?

Early on when we first started this blog, we asked the question: “What does leadership mean to you?” At the time, we talked about how leaders aren’t just about the title they hold. They often oversee teams—but not always. Sometimes, you might find yourself leading laterally with peers, without formally supervising anyone on the organizational chart.
The challenge? Too often, people step into leadership roles thinking it’s simply an extension of their day-to-day work, just performed at a higher level. But leadership isn’t just “more of the same.” If you’ve found yourself in a leadership role—intentionally or not, formally or informally—what, exactly, is your role?
Here’s one way to think about it:
It comes down to vision:
Seeing the bigger picture and setting a long-term direction
Positioning your team strategically for what’s ahead
Planning for continuity and sustainability
Inspiring and influencing others toward shared goals
Building strong relationships across teams and stakeholders
Celebrating wins and helping remove roadblocks
It comes down to communication:
Sharing your vision so that everyone sees the same destination
Adapting your style to the person, team, or situation
Creating space where all voices can be heard
It comes down to execution:
Establishing accountability without micromanaging
Finding effective, efficient ways to get the work done
Making timely, thoughtful decisions
It comes down to you:
Knowing yourself and practicing emotional intelligence
Prioritizing and delegating with intention
Leading from a place that feels authentic to you
This is by no means an exhaustive list—and leadership looks different in every context. Sometimes you may excel in one area while still developing in another. Leadership is both a privilege and a responsibility, and often, we don’t know what we don’t know. That’s why it requires not only recognizing what’s needed, but also committing ourselves to growing and applying those skills over time.
